Smithers-Oasis takes its legacy in the floral industry seriously, particularly around floral foam. Being the inventor of the category with the global leader brand of OASIS® Floral Foam, we focus much of our research efforts on sustainability.
The idea to create a floral foam with renewable resources has been a goal for many years. It is a juggling act – adjust the formula to incorporate sustainable materials while maintaining functionality and appearance. This project has been a top priority, as the long-term replacement of fossil and finite raw materials is of increasing importance.
The product development was led by Smithers-Oasis Germany and Corporate Research, and in 2021 they achieved their first goal with the launch of OASIS® NatureSource™ Floral Foam, the first floral foam with 20% biobased ingredients. Specifically, as tested by TÜV Rheinland, OASIS® NatureSource™ Floral Foam contains 20% biobased ingredients per DIN EN ISO 14021 and, per Din EN 16783-1, is certified 13% biobased carbon.
With a natural color that turns deep brown once saturated, the product delivers the performance that users have come to expect from OASIS® Floral Foam, including quick saturation, firm grip, supporting the ongoing health of the cut flowers, and extending the life of those flowers with our Maxlife technology platform.
